Reviews described the experience as calming, relaxing, and incredibly immersive, with some likening it to being fired into space. Funki Porcini Laserium Friday < Back 26 January 2024 Over 350 attendees queued at the Fourth Portal during the Gravesham Light Festival to experience Funki Porcini's 10-minute Laserium taster. Reviews described the experience as calming, relaxing, and incredibly immersive, with some likening it to being fired into space. Previous Next The Laserium is an 800-laser rig built by composer, musician, and artist James Braddell, better known as Funki Porcini. A fully immersive experience, the Laserium was the Fourth Portal's contribution to the opening night of the Gravesham Light Festival 2024. More than 350 people queued around neighbouring Bawley Beach, entering the Fourth Portal Lab in groups of 20-30 throughout the evening to experience a 10-minute taster. Inside the darkened church, lasers danced off mirrors and glass, pulsing in perfect synchrony with the music of the Ninja Tune veteran. Laserium Friday Reviews The free event drew the youngest children, the eldest attendees, and all ages in between. Responses varied, with younger visitors describing the performance as calming and relaxing, while older audiences found it exciting and immersive. The full one-hour immersive show took place on Sunday, 28 January 2024 - click here A discussion with Laserium collaborators Andy Payne and Nicky Cure, who built the Crawley Bots robots and the laser system, was held on Sunday, 28 January 2024 afternoon. Read more about the talk here . . Laserium Friday Reviews Gravesham Light Festival Continues The Gravesham Light Festival continued on Saturday, 27 January 2024, with expanded capacity at the Fourth Portal to welcome more than 450 visitors. Our neighbour, Lightship LV21 hosted a light installation and shadow show, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. Who is Funki Porcini? James Braddell, aka Funki Porcini, is a British electronic music provocateur and humourist, a defining artist of Ninja Tune’s early years. His work blends surreal jazz, found noise, synthetic textures, and dreamlike logic. The name Funki Porcini plays on Funghi Porcini, the Italian name for the Boletus edulis mushroom, commonly known as penny bun. He spent ten years in Italy composing for film and television before returning to England, where he signed with Ninja Tune in 1994 and set up his own studio, The Uterus Goldmine. • Fourth Portal | Hybrid Gathering and Work Space

Fourth Portal offers hybrid events spaces - real world and virtual - for meetings, events and social gatherings using the latest technologies. Welcome Gateway to the Fourth Industrial Revolution Animating dormant places, inspiring innovation, and building do-it-yourself communities for over 25 years Snapshot of the queue for the Fourth Portal, Gravesend, 26-28 Jan 2024. Fourth Portal fosters knowledge exchange by bringing technology, social gathering and innovation together. We animate discarded locations, invigorate communities and stimulate economic activity by inspiring confidence in people, places and potential. Town centres are not returning to how they were twenty years ago. In the next ten years, businesses and jobs will have little resemblance to companies and employment from ten years ago. Knowledge being exchanged at the Fourth Portal The next generation of 'go-to towns' will be the ones with DIY culture . Recent technological breakthroughs, including generative AI, will transform how people work, learn, interact, socialise and grow. Creating the spaces and inspiring communities will be crucial for towns wishing to be part of this next wave of innovation and social revolution. GRAVES END Fourth Portal St Andrew's Waterside Mission Church Gravesend 2023 - 2024 Fourth Portal opened its second test site in May 2023 at St. Andrew's Art Centre, nestled by the River Thames in Gravesend. St. Andrew's was infrequently used, except for occasional exhibitions, meaning it was rare for residents or visitors to access the stunning interior. By implication, the entire riverside was generally deserted, except for people fishing and dog walkers. Fourth Portal attracted more than 10,000 visitors in the first ten months, putting the location firmly on the map in Gravesend, across Kent, London and the UK. • Fourth Portal Great Yarmouth Pop-up

The Fourth Portal, Great Yarmouth pop-up operated from August to December 2022 to test the business model, including the Mind Room, and develop the hybrid component. GREAT YARMOUTH Fourth Portal at Stonecutters Way and North Quay, 2020-2022 We had a fun and successful test pop-up of Fourth Portal in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth from August to December 2023 Gallery TRANSFORMATION The then derelict Citizen Advice Bureau in a backstreet of Great Yarmouth slowly transformed into the Fourth Portal over a period of four months, soon becoming a vibrant and well-visited location. read more WATCH MIND ROOM The Fourth Portal Mind Room introduced available technologies that have the potential to impact those suffering from mental health issues in positive ways. read more MIND ROOM LIFTPOD The Liftpod was the first attempt at converting an old goods lift within the pop-up into a fully hybrid space, merging the virtual lift with people sitting in the real-world elevator. read more ARTISTS Fourth Portal engaged local artist Peter Rudolfo, exhibiting his dreamlike Great Yarmouth street scenes in the main room and artist Kevin Gavaghan challenging paintings in the Mind Room. read more KEVIN GAVAGHAN Kevin Gavaghan Kevin Gavaghan is a self-taught artist, originating from North London and now working from his studio in Hertford. His paintings are evocative figurative imagery dancing around the fringes of surrealism and abstract art. Kevin predominantly paints in oils. His process involves collecting images and photographs that inform an emotional connection about any given moment in his past. The artworks reflect emotional memories of his life growing up in the 1970s in a large Irish family, coping with the complexity of life with Tourette Tics and anxiety-related illnesses. Paintings are created organically and continue to develop throughout the process. Each painting will often change personality many times before settling on what Kevin believes reflects a truth within his thoughts. An eye condition called ‘Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) developed 20 years ago that sometimes distorts his vision by producing fluid on his retina. Kevin chose to embrace the condition within his art. This embrace has led to a palette and application of bold vibrant colours. The paintings dissect and bend his figures and portraits to the point of abstraction. For Kevin, it highlights the multi-layers of life and our inner emotions rather than the external likeness of his subject. Peter Rodulfo Peter Rodulfo (b. 1958, Washington DC) is a British artist and sculptor. He spent much of his youth travelling across India and Australia before settling in Norfolk. Peter studied at the Norwich School of Art and Design between 1975 to 1979. His first solo exhibition was in 1980 at the Margaret Fisher Gallery; he has continued to exhibit widely over the next forty years in the UK, Europe, Asia, the USA, and South America. For the past decade, he has resided in the Norfolk coastal town of Great Yarmouth, where he has absorbed the novel visual experience of the urban environment and popular seaside culture. The subject matter, style and imagery of his paintings have remained broad and experimental, possessing a variety of meanings while directly addressing the viewer's powers of association and imagination. Peter's work inhabits the world between what we know and dream, treading a line between reality and imagination. His artworks evoke a kind of instability, a sense that change, like the end to a long British Winter, is only constant. GOODBYE The Great Yarmouth pop-up was a challenging undertaking with a location off the main thoroughfares, however, local people embraced the Fourth Portal and were sad to see it closing after such a short time. comments Thank you Great Yarmouth 4 December 2022 The Fourth Portal popup in Great Yarmouth has now ended. Our original intention was to stay for only six weeks to test the concept during summer. Stage one went so well that we decided to stay for another ten weeks to complete our stage two testing. Discussion Festival is online in a very cool 4-floor virtual house, which you can just wander around as you please. Free entry. Read about previous Discussion Festivals.
