The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) will fundamentally changing the way we live, work and relate to one another. CONTACT Fourth Portal will open in May 2023 St Andrews Arts Centre, 19 Royal Pier Rd, Gravesend DA12 2BD opening hours “We are at the beginning of a revolution that is fundamentally changing the way we live, work and relate to one another” (Klaus Schwab) The pace of technological change and new innovations has seen a major leap forward in recent years, with many indications that this is likely to speed-up rapidly over the coming decade. As with the coming of the steam engine, the microchip, the World Wide Web and mobile phones, these new technologies are going to fundamentally change the way everyone live their lives. This coming period has been coined the Fourth Industrial Revolution or 4IR. Fourth Portal presents some of the latest innovations with particular focus on environment, care-in-the-home, self-education and audio technologies, and invites researchers, technologists and entrepreneurs to offer talks and masterclasses that provide an overview how such technologies work, the societal impact and potential business opportunity they offer. Kevin Gavaghan Kevin Gavaghan is a self taught artist, originally from North London but now works from his studio in Hertford. His paintings are evocative figurative imagery dancing around the fringes of surrealism and abstract art. He predominantly paints in oils and his process is to collect images and photographs that inform an emotional connection about any given moment in his past. These images reflect an emotional memory of his life growing up from the 1970s in a large Irish family, coping with the complexity of life with Tourette Tics and anxiety related illnesses. He creates organically and his paintings continue to develop throughout the process often changing their personality many times before settling on what he believes reflects a truth within his thoughts. Approximately 20 years ago he developed an eye condition called ‘Central Serous Retinopathy’ (CSR) which can distort his vision by producing fluid on his retina. He chose to embrace this in his art and Kevin’s palette and application of bold vibrant colours dissect and bend his figures and portraits to the point of abstraction which, for Kevin, highlight the multi layers of life and our inner emotions rather than the external likeness of his subject. Peter Rodulfo Peter Rodulfo (b. 1958, Washington DC) a British artist and sculptor spent much of his youth travelling across India and Australia, before settling in Norfolk where he studied at the Norwich School of Art and Design between 1975 to 1979. His first solo exhibition was held in 1980 at the Margaret Fisher Gallery, and for the past forty years has continued to exhibit widely both in the UK, Europe, Asia, USA, and South America. For the past decade he has resided in the Norfolk coastal town of Great Yarmouth, where he has absorbed the novel visual experience of the urban environment and popular seaside culture. During the past two years the subject-matter, style and imagery of his paintings has remained broad and experimental, possessing a variety of meanings, and directly addressing both the viewers powers of association and imagination. Rudolfo's work inhabits the world between what we know and what we dream, treading a line between reality and imagination. They evoke a kind of instability, a sense that change, like the end to a long British Winter, is only constant. They are both alien and a form of shorthand in the form of gestures that refer to shared experience that reveal a mesmerising creative world.

Portal B transforms a traditional English pub into a futuristic cafe bar shared workspace offering light locally sourced food, soundart and electronic performances and talks. Portal B | St John's Head Portal B status updated June 2021 Pandemic Lockdown and Restrictions Portal B opened in June 2020 with many restrictions following the first UK Covid-19 lockdown. A licensed premises, Portal B was unable to host live gigs, workshops or exhibitions. Customers could only enter the premises with people within their own household and were not allowed to stand or move around. A further lockdown in November 2020 and the ongoing restriction from May 2021 when guests were again allowed with table seating only inside made the project unviable. Learning and Virtual Portals Although Portal B was an exceptionally difficult situation, the learning from creating the space and how it engaged those who visited did provide useful insights that contributed to the thinking behind Portal D and particularly Portal C. This will be written up and posted on the journal pages on this website and the Haphazard.Business blog, which is documenting the portal's creation process. 20 June 2021. Ten years of research and development has been spent developing these original portal spaces focused on technology, environment and sound that offer opportunity for entrepreneurship that benefits whole communities while reducing the impact on the planet. History How Ideas Become Reality Hello, I am John McKiernan, the founder of Fourth Portal, a business that I have been toying with for more than a decade. Having had an early career in advertising before travelling the world, I set up one of the UK's first coffee bar chains in South East London in the 1990s, which included performance spaces and a theatre. Since closing the last of these in 2009, I have been toying with creating a new type of hub space focused on technology, environment and sound that could create opportunities for entrepreneurship that benefits whole communities while reducing the impact on the planet. To understand how people consider ideas and make decisions I curated and produced a large number of long-term public art intervention s , along with my ever-increasing network of fantastic Platform-7 collaborators (view here ). In spring 2019, I set out on a journey to finally take the plunge and create my first hub somewhere in the UK. Calling the journey Haphazard Business I began documenting my thinking and reasons for my decisions as I went in search of a suitable location. The intention has been to outline how haphazard such a journey can really be, with unexpected obstacles and random meetings dictating direction of travel (and this was well before the Covid-19 outbreak sent the world into a haphazard spin). One such random event was meeting Gillian Harwood, founder of Busworks in King's Cross - a large 350+ business hub, who invited me to view Great Yarmouth, an English seaside town as a potential location. Gillian and I clicked immediately and I agreed to open Fourth Portal in two buildings that she has recently purchased. Even before the Covid-19 outbreak, this was a risky venture as the town has been on a downward economic spiral for many years. However, the locals are very friendly, chatty and welcoming and I have really taken to the town, so I decided to set up here. At time of writing, 15 April 2020, no one knows how the Covid-19 outbreak will play out; basically the world is closing down for the spring. What we do know is that beyond this period a new World will emerge, and I believe Fourth Portal will become one of the beacons for a positive more reflective future. Thanks for your interest in Fourth Portal; I hope you will visit soon, John M Read More >
