- Reclaiming Wisdom
Gravesend Innovation Showcase 2024 events, locations, talks, speakers and times. < Back Reclaiming Wisdom Start Time 12:00 Running Time 30 Minutes Location 9. Gravesend Library Event Type Talk About the Event Introduction Why does our education system emphasise head-based learning at the expense of the hand or the heart? What is education's ecological purpose? What is the point of human beings? Unless we find good answers to the above questions, future educators will become passive bystanders in a technological arms race between gadgets designed to fabricate the evidence of learning and gadgets designed to detect plagiarism. More on the event lead John Wood (b. 1945) is Emeritus Professor of Design at Goldsmiths College, University of London. As Deputy Head of the Fine Art Department at Goldsmiths (1978-1988) he taught many well known YBAs ('Young British Artists') before creating undergraduate and postgraduate design degrees that foregrounded ethical and environmental aspects of design's impact. These programmes helped to shape the current design department. In 2002 he co-founded the Writing-PAD Network and in 2007 launched the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (Intellect). John's most recent book is Metadesigning Designing in the Anthropocene, (2022), Routledge, London & New York, ISBN 9781032067520. He is also an active and original member of the cult band 'Deaf School' and performs stand-up comedy as 'The Reverend Max Ripple'. Q2: What were your initial impressions? My initial impressions were of a somewhat bemused nature, having some trouble with getting my head around the concept of AI being used as a tool for social enhancement and the melding of people with ideas in art or industry creating opportunity. Q3: How has Fourth Portal inspired you? I have been inspired to value the Fourth Portal as a comfortable space where I can meet people of diverse background, ethnicity, religion etc. with the facility to discuss ideas supported by the knowledge that it is a safe space. With the facility to explore my artistic attributes anew and become aware of new technologies and materials. The use of which has the potential to reinvigorate the community of Gravesend. Q4: Will the inspiration be of benefit in the future? I can only see the inspiration that I am getting from the Fourth Portal carrying on into the future reinvigorating the community of my mind.
