- Dawn Cole | FourthPortal
< Back Dawn Cole Gravesend Print Artist In Residence Spring-Autumn 2023 Dawn Cole is an award-winning artist who was the Fourth Portal Print artist in residence from spring to autumn 2023. Based in Margate in Kent, Dawn's research-led practice centres around memories and memorialisation. Kent-based artist Dawn Cole works primarily as a printmaker using numerous techniques that utilise personal archives and national collections to explore themes of recollection, memory and memorial. Dawn founded the Pushing Print Festival in Margate and was the first Artist-in-Residence in Canterbury Cathedral 1500 year history. The V&A 2011 Print Prize winner, Dawn has received several Arts Council England awards. Dawn's main body of work has centred on the archive of her Great Aunt, Clarice Spratling, a World War One VAD nurse. The Fourth Portal residency centred around the Gravesend's historic papermaking industry and resulted in The Versatility of Paper project. The accompanying call-out resulted in 65 artwork responses being sent from across the UK and exhibited at the Fourth Portal. A printed newspaper has been produced to commemorate the versatility of paper and the stories it uncovered. Dawn’s work with Fourth Portal will continue as she works on her ongoing ‘Monotype Compositions’ project. The work will eventually conclude with an audio sound artwork created from a seemingly waste product of the retired Monotype printing process. info@fourthportal.com Residency: Spring to Autumn 2023 To play, press and hold the enter key. - Ecoclimates: Climate-Response Modelling of Vegetation | FourthPortal
< Back Ecoclimates: Climate-Response Modelling of Vegetation A simulator producing complex and realistic outdoor landscapes with vegetation growth and weather dynamics. With the ability to simulate more than 500,000 plants with individual geometries, the program can assist in predicting climate-response of vegetation to deforestation and changing weather patterns. ACM Trans. Graph., Vol. 41, No. 4, Article 155 24 Jan 2024 Publication date: July 2022 A simulator producing complex and realistic outdoor landscapes with vegetation growth and weather dynamics. With the ability to simulate more than 500,000 plants with individual geometries, the program can assist in predicting climate-response of vegetation to deforestation and changing weather patterns. Understanding the complex interconnection of plant ecosystems and their impact on the climate system plays a central role in predicting climate dynamics. While it is well understood that climatic variations cause changes in ecosystem distribution, structure and function, only recently it has been recognized that the composition of vegetation also impacts the development of weather, which – in turn – leads to the development of local climatic variation (microclimates) [Bastiaansen et al. 2020]. Researchers study the interconnection of plant ecosystems and their impact on the climate system as ecoclimates. In this paper, we propose a method to capture feedback loops between vegetation, soil, and the atmosphere at a local scale. We extend existing vegetation and atmosphere models and combine them with a novel soil model. This allows us to jointly simulate the hydrologic cycle, heat transfer, and light availability. We model tree growth interactively in response to gradients of water, temperature and light. As a result, we are able to capture a range of ecoclimate phenomena that have not been emergently modeled before, including geomorphic controls, forest edge effects, the Foehn effect and spatial vegetation patterning. __ WOJTEK PAŁUBICKI, UAM, Poland MIŁOSZ MAKOWSKI, UAM, Poland WERONIKA GAJDA, UAM, Poland TORSTEN HÄDRICH, KAUST, KSA DOMINIK L. - Unnamed | FourthPortal
< Back Unnamed Regular visitor who wishes not to be identified. While on an evening river walk with a local group, we stopped at St Andrews to look at Bawley Bay and the low commemorative plaque on the pavement corner. Fascinated by the plants outside, we peered meekly into the lobby. ( A W.I. meeting inside perhaps?). Animated by this discovery, we had an ad hoc discussion-while we blocked the pavement-about what Gravesend meant for us, in its unexpected richness. Many of the group were unaware that there even artists in the town! This individual visited the following day, with the rest being history, as is said. Q1: How and when did you first discover the Fourth Portal? While on an evening river walk with a local group, we stopped at St Andrews to look at Bawley Bay and the low commemorative plaque on the pavement corner. Fascinated by the plants outside, we peered meekly into the lobby. ( A W.I. meeting inside perhaps?). Animated by this discovery, we had an ad hoc discussion-while we blocked the pavement-about what Gravesend meant for us, in its unexpected richness. Many of the group were unaware that there even artists in the town! This individual visited the following day, with the rest being history, as is said. Q2: What were your initial impressions? St Andrews is now inviting-bowls one over-as it is open for more than just art exhibitions, yoga sessions and play readings. The inviting rich interior, with the evocative stained glass windows and objet d'art provide the stimulus to visit regularly, to support events and to meet friends rather than 'up' in the town. (As St Andrews is unimpeded on 3 sides, the light reflected off the Thames and from Bawley Bay at high tide, filters through the stained glass windows and is probably as the architect and artist envisaged them to be -as islands of spiritual and visual inspiration.) Q3: How has Fourth Portal inspired you? St Andrews emanates positive energy- enhanced by the continually evolving website-and the constant flow of creative visitors. This suggested to the writer the use of black biro- rather then the revered black ink- freedom from 90 degree paper corners as the paper was slightly off key, and by folding the sheet beforehand, freedom too from the flat surface.(Why not retrieve charcoal from a riverside barbecue, and draw on a greasy crumpled paper bag..indeed!) St Andrews presents an alternative to formal exhibitions, with refreshing insights into ways of making art. Q4: Will the inspiration be of benefit in the future? It would be untrue to deny the inspiration and impact that this initiative has had. It has given one the freedom to move away from the expensively mounted, framed art work, the attendant long C.V., the submission and selling fees, the pressure to sell to cover basic costs, as well as 'saving face' under the barrage of...'and you did not even sell!' It was a pleasure to be with unknown creative individuals -artists and visitors alike- all of whom responded with freshness and originality to the proposal. Q5: (optional) Anything you wish to add? (One hopes that somewhere in the wordy above, there is a positive kernel for fourthportal.) The picture will be sent via Whats App, soon. It was taken at about 9.50 am, on the overcast Wednesday 3rd January, from the corner outside the still closed market. Its black mass, with south light filtering through the skylights, inspired this photo. With my appreciation for your energy, insight and appreciation of the creative process, that enabled Versatility of Paper to become the success it has proved to be. Thank you, too, for your hard work for the accompanying Commemorative Newspaper. Previous Next
