- Alternative Gravesham
An experimental all-day open event to showcase some of Gravesham's more unusual goings-on. Performance and presentations were tilted towards new technology, although they were not essential. Alternative Gravesham < Back 12 August 2023 An experimental all-day open event to showcase some of Gravesham's more unusual goings-on. Performance and presentations were tilted towards new technology, although they were not essential. Previous Next About the event Alternative Gravesham was an all-day experimental Saturday open house event, inviting artists, technologists, writers, and inventors to bring in their latest idea, performance, art or innovation. This event was lightly curated, on a first-come, first-served approach. Focused on being a relaxing and fun day, the day was to encourage residents of Gravesham to show the stuff they are creating in their bedrooms, shed or studio - we were pretty open to showing almost anything. Visitors to the Fourth Portal were encouraged to engage with the work, enjoy a beer or a coffee and see what is inspiring the local underground. - Textiles, Garb and the Thames
Textiles, Garb and the Thames explored the clothing of those working on the Thames - past, present, and future - through textiles, poetry, song, storytelling, and workshops. From the Watermen to the evolving attire of Gravesend Riverside workers, the event examined how clothing reflects labour, identity, and cultural change along the river. Textiles, Garb and the Thames < Back 1 February 2024 Textiles, Garb and the Thames explored the clothing of those working on the Thames - past, present, and future - through textiles, poetry, song, storytelling, and workshops. From the Watermen to the evolving attire of Gravesend Riverside workers, the event examined how clothing reflects labour, identity, and cultural change along the river. Previous Next Textiles, Garb, and the Thames delved into the history of clothing along the Thames through textiles, poetry, song, storytelling, and workshops. The opening day featured poetry performances, notably works by Henry T. Bradford, a 94-year-old local resident with extensive experience working on various docks and tugs along the Thames. Former Mayor Michael Weban delivered a talk comparing historical uniforms to contemporary Thames-based attire, discussing materials, functionality, and evolving regulations, including personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. The exhibition showcased photos of dockland workers, tugboats, RNLI clothing, maritime garb, and other nautical-themed images. Within this space, tech pack designs for a maritime clothing collection were presented, inspired by the displayed photos. LV21, the red ship docked next to Fourth Portal, loaned clothing and uniforms from Trinity House and other maritime collections, allowing attendees to observe ceremonial dress uniforms used on the Thames. Knowledge Exchange Curator Matthew Davies reflected on the intergenerational exchange of knowledge and understanding. Knowledge Diffusion The Fourth Portal emphasised creating an environment where knowledge can be exchanged and focused on how knowledge is diffused. A local teenager visited the exhibition with her mother for inspiration for her A-level textile thesis. She later messaged: "Visited for references for my Textiles A-Level and found some amazing historical work for inspiration in my project! Going off to study for a degree in Costume so this was very valuable!! :)" Knowledge Demonstration A former teacher from a local grammar school demonstrated threading a Singer sewing machine. Knowledge Sharing RNLI volunteers provided an overview of their survival kit and materials. Ombrella Concrete Plus Friends < Back 7 October 2023 An all-day music event with an eclectic line-up of electronic & leftfield artists from all over Kent to celebrate Gravesend's local community & beyond. Previous Next Ombrelle Concrète - an absurdity in any literal sense. A concept confounded by its composition. Protection rendered impracticable by material. As an artistic doctrine however it is essential . A guardian against the forces of anodyne commercialism, it fosters a collective of true creativity and experimentalism. Joseph Beuys stated that ‘art is the only possibility for evolution‘. Ombrelle Concrète offers shelter from the forces of blandness and conformity creating a medium for this evolution. - Dawn Cole | FourthPortal
< Back Dawn Cole Gravesend Print Artist In Residence Spring-Autumn 2023 Dawn Cole is an award-winning artist who was the Fourth Portal Print artist in residence from spring to autumn 2023. Based in Margate in Kent, Dawn's research-led practice centres around memories and memorialisation. Kent-based artist Dawn Cole works primarily as a printmaker using numerous techniques that utilise personal archives and national collections to explore themes of recollection, memory and memorial. Dawn founded the Pushing Print Festival in Margate and was the first Artist-in-Residence in Canterbury Cathedral 1500 year history. The V&A 2011 Print Prize winner, Dawn has received several Arts Council England awards. Dawn's main body of work has centred on the archive of her Great Aunt, Clarice Spratling, a World War One VAD nurse. The Fourth Portal residency centred around the Gravesend's historic papermaking industry and resulted in The Versatility of Paper project. The accompanying call-out resulted in 65 artwork responses being sent from across the UK and exhibited at the Fourth Portal. A printed newspaper has been produced to commemorate the versatility of paper and the stories it uncovered. Dawn’s work with Fourth Portal will continue as she works on her ongoing ‘Monotype Compositions’ project. The work will eventually conclude with an audio sound artwork created from a seemingly waste product of the retired Monotype printing process. info@fourthportal.com Residency: Spring to Autumn 2023 To play, press and hold the enter key.
