< Back Socio-Technical Trust For Multi-Modal Hearing Assistive Technology The landscape of opportunity is rapidly changing for audio-visual (AV) hearing assistive technology. Developers must consider trust as a factor in developing new AV assistive hearing technologies, as trust may ultimately drive adoption of this technology within broader society. IEEE xPlore 2 Aug 2023 The landscape of opportunity is rapidly changing for audio-visual (AV) hearing assistive technology. While hearing assistive devices, such as hearing aids, have traditionally been developed for populations of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) communities, the ubiquitous use of in-ear technology and recent advances in edge computing are reformulating what drives research and development in this domain. With that comes new challenges to consider from the perspective of multiple different stakeholders. In this position paper, we elaborate on seven key socio-technical challenges that may impede the adoption of trustworthy multi-modal hearing assistive technologies. We also draw upon a recent survey being piloted in the UK to examine perceptions of trust for audio systems in the context of human rights. We strongly encourage the research community to consider trust as a factor in developing new AV assistive hearing technologies, as trust may ultimately drive adoption of this technology within broader society. - Mickey Mouse Has Entered The Public Domain | FourthPortal
< Back Mickey Mouse Has Entered The Public Domain No sooner has Mickey Mouse come out of copyright than there is a generative AI model that allows anyone to generate images of Mickey. Huggingface.co 2 Jan 2024 The post copyrignt world has arrived, the possibilities are tantalising. Mickey Mouse just entered the public domain today and here's a generative AI model that you can play with. Just type in the words and see what comes out! Mickey-1928 is fine-tuned version of Stable-Diffusion-xl trained on 96 stills in the public domain from 1928. Mickey-1928 can generate images of Mickey, Minnie and, to a much lesser extent, Pete (with the prompt PeteLegPete). Since 2024, the first three cartoons of Mickey are in the public domain. The final dataset includes: 40 stills from Gallopin' Gaucho (in color) 22 stills from Plane Crazy 34 stills from Steamboat Willie. The stills are not currently available in high quality and you should not expect consistently good results from Mickey-1928. The color images from Gallopin' Gauchoare in 360x360 pixels. Hopefully with the cartoons now being part of the public domain, higher definition versions should be available. The generated images aims adhere to the 1928 design in order to have Mickey, Minnie and Pete and in the public domain. This is still a work in progress: while the model is in development, generated images should be checked to ensure they really are in the public domain design. https://huggingface.co/Pclanglais/Mickey-1928?text=drawing+of+Mickey%2C+discovering+ChatGPT For more: Previous Next

Portal B transforms a traditional English pub into a futuristic cafe bar shared workspace offering light locally sourced food, soundart and electronic performances and talks. Portal B | St John's Head Portal B status updated June 2021 Pandemic Lockdown and Restrictions Portal B opened in June 2020 with many restrictions following the first UK Covid-19 lockdown. A licensed premises, Portal B was unable to host live gigs, workshops or exhibitions. Customers could only enter the premises with people within their own household and were not allowed to stand or move around. A further lockdown in November 2020 and the ongoing restriction from May 2021 when guests were again allowed with table seating only inside made the project unviable. Learning and Virtual Portals Although Portal B was an exceptionally difficult situation, the learning from creating the space and how it engaged those who visited did provide useful insights that contributed to the thinking behind Portal D and particularly Portal C. This will be written up and posted on the journal pages on this website and the Haphazard.Business blog, which is documenting the portal's creation process. 20 June 2021. Original Text and Plan for Portal B pre-pandemic March 2020 Portal B transforms a traditional English pub into a futuristic cafe bar shared workspace offering light locally sourced food, soundart and electronic performances and talks. Work Lounge Surrounded by challenging art, this comfortable conceptual oasis encourages discovery of fascinating innovations and facilitates discussion on the wider impact of technology, climate change and the implications for work and business. - Paul Prudence: Thinking Like An Algorithm | FourthPortal
< Back Paul Prudence: Thinking Like An Algorithm Hand-Plotting And Typewritings Expanded.Art 6 Dec 2023 You Might Not Know an Algorithm Until You've Typed it Artist Paul Prudence discusses using a typewriter to think like an algorithm. Anika Meier: Paul, you have a background in textile design. How did you get into art? Paul Prudence: My first degree was in textile design, but subsequently I shifted my path towards art, first by doing a post-grad diploma in textile art and then an MA in fine art. So, although I initially set out on an educational path in textiles, specifically printed design, I was always working on art projects, or at least thinking about art and researching its various historical movements since my early teens. AM: You’re known for repurposing an ordinary typewriter to behave like an electronic plotter. Why a typewriter? PP: I had been aware of and inspired by the concrete poetry movement, and as a writer, I was thinking about ways in which I could combine writing and visual art for a while. It was only by chance that one day I found an old Silver Reed typewriter in a charity shop. I bought the machine, took it home, and it sat in the corner of my studio space for some months before I tried to use it. When I did, the keys were a bit clogged and the ink was dry, so there was no typing to be had from it. Through a bit of frustration and some luck, I began to experiment with holding a pen in place while I typed and moved the platen roller up and down. I immediately recognised that I had a rudimentary mechanical plotting system sitting right in front of me. The idea of having a hand-operated mechanical plotter in the age of expensive and sophisticated electronic plotters amused me. From then on, I set out to explore ways in which to develop techniques for mimicking processes and algorithms. Even after nearly three years of using this technique, I am still finding new patterns and systems. https://www.expanded.art/articles/paul-prudence-thinking-like-an-algorithm For more: Algorithm, Design Previous Next
