Gravesend’s own Hypermedia returned to Fourth Portal for another evening of DIY poetry, spoken word, music, open mic, and discussion. Possibly the most diverse and relaxed lineup to date, Hypermedia Open Space 8 saw its youngest performer yet, Elsie, aged 7, receive a roaring reception, followed by Tony, aged 84, who was met with equal appreciation. Hypermedia DIY Open Space 8 < Back 10 April 2024 Gravesend’s own Hypermedia returned to Fourth Portal for another evening of DIY poetry, spoken word, music, open mic, and discussion. Previous Next Hypermedia DIY Open Space 8 A full house flowe d throughout the four-hour event, as poets, musicians, and sound artists from across t he southeast descended on the Fourth Portal stage to share their work. Performers (some names missing): Anthony Hart Chris Porcas Elsie Rayner Joe Cleary Johnny G Lee Campbell Nick Nola Rayner Poet Redeeming Features Ryan Smellilot Sophie Sirota Tony Thorley Zack Davies No Age Limit A standout moment came from 7-year-old Elsie Rayner , performing her first-ever poem in front of a packed audience. Watching a child stand before an audience of appreciative adults perfectly captured the supportive nature of Hypermedia events. Befor e Elsie, her 10-year-old sister, Nola Rayner, delivered an unforgettable rendition of Pam Ayres’ classic Oh! I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth. Proving that spoken word has no age limits, Tony Thorley, 84, followed soon after, showing that creativity has no barriers 10-year-old, Nola Rayner 7-year-old, Elsie Rayner A Night of Standout Performances The night saw performances from Poet Redeeming Features, whose raw and punchy punk poetry pushed audience boundaries with its mix of humour, intensity, and social commentary. Johnny G is becoming a Gravesend legend, his piano and cover numbers consistently hitting the right note and bringing a special energy. The growing confidence of Gravesend's Anthony Hart and Chris Porcas is inspiring others to take to the stage and share their words for the first time. In the busy throng of the evening, a steel guitar performance stunned the audience befor e they clapped along to Ryan's clever spoken song. Building Partnerships and Confidence Hypermedia and Fourth Portal are about more than an enjoyable evening - they are ab out connecting with other innovative events, groups, and move ments while offering opportunities beyond performance. Sound Engineer | Dan Simpson Un der the remote guidance of renowned visual and audio engineer Oli May, Dan Simpson stepped in to engineer the sound and visuals for Open Space 8. With a rapid stage turnover of nearly 20 performances across different genres, Dan was thrown into the deep end - and delivered flawlessly. Handling the most diverse Hypermedia event to date, he managed the technical side with the calmness and expertise of a seasoned professional, despite being at the start of his care er. - Evan Parker
Fourth Portal was proud to host a sell-out matinee performance by Evan Parker, a pioneering figure in European free jazz and free improvisation. The Sunday afternoon format proved popular, with a last-minute surge in demand leading to walk-ups being turned away at the door. Evan Parker < Back 18 February 2024 Fourth Portal was proud to host a sell-out matinee performance by Evan Parker, a pioneering figure in European free jazz and free improvisation. The Sunday afternoon format proved popular, with a last-minute surge in demand leading to walk-ups being turned away at the door. Previous Next Innovation in Sound Innovation isn't limited to engineering, social change, or technology - it extends to how an instrument is played. The Fourth Portal was proud to welcome another British music legend, saxophonist Evan Parker, whose challenging free-form jazz continues to push the boundaries of improvisation. A Rare Experience for Gravesend Gravesend audiences have few chances to witness live jazz, let alone jazz improvisation. The reaction to Parker’s performance was remarkable, with a post-gig buzz filling St. Andrew’s, the former seafarers' church that now houses the Fourth Portal Lab. Audience Reviews "Thoroughly enjoyed it." — Wesley & Ester "Someone who knows little about music, it was really interesting." — Eva "Really clever." — Steve "We absolutely loved it – hypnotic." — Lincolnshire Family "It was amazing." — Christine & Gemma "Mind-blowing." — Liz Audience reviews More on Evan Parker British tenor and soprano saxophonist Evan Parker has been a pioneering force in free music since the 1960s. While his work spans small and large ensembles, he is best known for his solo soprano saxophone explorations, where he employs techniques such as circular breathing, double-tonguing, multiphonics, and cross-fingering. Parker describes his solo performances as entering a trance state, creating a hypnotic illusion of polyphony—a seamless, intricate flow of sound that seems impossible for a single musician to produce in real time. Many listeners find it hard to believe that one person can generate such complex and textured music live (Cafe OTO). Over his extensive career, Parker has recorded numerous solo and group albums and collaborated with Peter Brötzmann, Michael Nyman, John Stevens, Derek Bailey, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, Thurston Moore, and many others. 📖 Full Bio: Evan Parker – Wikipedia This event has ended. All Well Polar Notes by Allegra Rosenberg 7 Dec 2022 Example of linking data The Fourth Portal Lab hosts a plaque dedicated to the crew lost searching for the Northwest Passage in 1845. This PhD research uses a form of linking data to decipher the donors who paid for a search party to find the ships. ___ Using the list included in the book The Voyage of the Fox, I sought out biographical detail for as many of the donors to Leopold McClintock’s 1857 expedition in search of Sir John Franklin as I could find. The list is a fascinating cross-section of Victorian society: from artists to Chartists, musicians to engineers, Navy and Army men to Bishops, all invested in the ongoing public project that was the search for Franklin. There are many rich peers and notable MPs on the list, but there are also many nigh-anonymous Esqs. and Misses who gave just a few shillings. Naturally I was able to find far more biographical detail on the wealthier and more famous donors—however, in opening this up as a Public Humanities project I hope to receive comments and input that will expand the available information to hopefully include more details about the unidentified donors. ___ Full details here The Donors of the Fox Posted on December 7, 2022 by admin This summer, I was the recipient of the generous Digital Humanities Fellowship from NYU. My proposed project was a broad-reaching initiative called “Visualizing the Victorian Polar Network,” but once the fellowship began I quickly realized I had to narrow my view, and ended up settling on a revised version of my project where I would create an interactive, annotated biographical database of all of the donors to Leopold McClintock’s 1857 Franklin search expedition, spearheaded by Lady Jane Franklin as a private expedition to look for her missing husband and his crew after the Admiralty had abdicated all responsibility for the continuing search. cont ... https://allegrarosenberg.notion.site/9d3c4db5a6f743668405ef7166729358?v=25c9bbaa820c4542b8e1a6278f5ec7c7 For more: Machine Learning, Linked Data, Meta Tags Previous Next
