  • Rewilding The Internet | FourthPortal

< Back Rewilding The Internet The internet has become an extractive and fragile monoculture. But we can revitalize it using lessons learned by ecologists. NOĒMA 16 Apr 2024 We Need To Rewild The Internet "Our online spaces are not ecosystems, though tech firms love that word . They’re plantations; highly concentrated and controlled environments, closer kin to the industrial farming of the cattle feedlot or battery chicken farms that madden the creatures trapped within. We all know this. We see it each time we reach for our phones. But what most people have missed is how this concentration reaches deep into the internet’s infrastructure — the pipes and protocols, cables and networks, search engines and browsers. These structures determine how we build and use the internet, now and in the future. [...] Up close, internet concentration seems too intricate to untangle; from far away, it seems too difficult to deal with. But what if we thought of the internet not as a doomsday “ hyperobject ,” but as a damaged and struggling ecosystem facing destruction? What if we looked at it not with helpless horror at the eldritch encroachment of its current controllers, but with compassion, constructiveness and hope? Technologists are great at incremental fixes, but to regenerate entire habitats we need to learn from ecologists who take a whole-systems view. Ecologists know something just as important, too; how to keep going when others first ignore you and then say it’s too late, how to mobilize and work collectively, and how to build pockets of diversity and resilience that will outlast them, creating possibilities for an abundant future they can imagine but never control. We don’t need to repair the internet’s infrastructure. We need to rewild it. [...] We need to stop thinking of internet infrastructure as too hard to fix. It’s the underlying system we use for nearly everything we do. The former prime minister of Sweden, Carl Bildt, and former Canadian deputy foreign minister, Gordon Smith wrote in 2016 that the internet was becoming “the infrastructure of all infrastructure.” It’s how we organize, connect and build knowledge, even — perhaps — planetary intelligence. Right now, it’s concentrated, fragile and utterly toxic." • SS Richard Montgomery Screening

A special screening of 3D drone footage of the SS Richard Montgomery Medway shipwreck and how the Port of London Authority identify other wreaks in the Thames and estuary. SS Richard Montgomery Screening < Back 3 December 2023 A special screening of 3D drone footage of the SS Richard Montgomery Medway shipwreck and how the Port of London Authority identify other wreaks in the Thames and estuary. Previous Next Port of London Authority Hyrdrogeograher, Cullen O Donnell presented 3D drone visualisation of the Medway shipwreck, SS Richard Montgomery, on the Fourth Portal Lab's big screen. Cullen discussed shipwrecks in the Thames and how the footage of the wreck was gathered and manipulated. Thia was a one-off occassion and was accompanied by Joe Whittaker of DAZZLE and Ship's Company singing some sea-shanties in keeping with the Thames and shipwrecks. More on the SS Richard Montgomery, from New Scientist Magazine. "Three masts sticking up above the waves near the coastal town of Sheerness in the UK mark the spot where a deadly wreck has been rusting for almost 80 years. They belong to the SS Richard Montgomery, a US second world war-era ship that ran aground in August 1944 with a cargo of bombs. The half-submerged wreck, just 2 kilometres from land, still has 1400 tonnes of TNT in its holds." [read on here...] (New Scientist, By Mick Hamer, 14 January 2022). • Elliott Sirota-Gott | FourthPortal

< Back Elliott Sirota-Gott Multimedia artist and music maker born in Kent. Working under the artist name 'smelliott', they are dedicated to creating extreme art to push how people view and interact with art and music. I first heard about the Fourth Portal through Hypermedia. I heard about the event around September 2023. Q1: How and when did you first discover the Fourth Portal? I first heard about the Fourth Portal through Hypermedia. I heard about the event around September 2023. Q2: What were your initial impressions? Such a cool space. I really love how the old paintings from the church blend with the old tech sprawled everywhere. I remember meeting John, as well as Joe and Harriet (who run Hypermedia) and feeling really welcome. It's not a place someone might expect to be in Gravesend. Q3: How has Fourth Portal inspired you? Fourthportal is just an encouraging space. Having monthly events like Hypermedia really gets me to make at least one musical piece a month, especially when I'm in a bit of a drought. It's a place that is easy to look forward to going to. It really does feel like a small community of people. Q4: Will the inspiration be of benefit in the future? Without inspiration, people wouldn't create! I think Fourthportal is an important place, especially with the events that are on. Giving artists a space to perform in front of people, often for the first time, is essential. If Fourthportal is around, people will always have a place to be inspired and perform and make things. Q5: (optional) Anything you wish to add? Fourthportal is also great for meeting artists and other creative people. I wouldn't know so many people if it wasn't for the space, including the people who run the artists collective and gallery space I am a part of. Addendum [Fourth Portal]. Elliot (Smelliot) is now collaborating with Kieron C at Metamorphika studio, a developing alliance of independent contemporary artists taking workspace into a new realm. Hackney resident Kieron came to the Fourth Portal following a random meeting with Fourth Portal John on a train. Elliot from Whitstable met Kieron at Hypermedia in the summer. This meeting of minds and collaboration away from the Fourth Portal captures how networks form and new movements begin, resembling the original vision for the Net. Metamorphika Studio wrote: "We love what you are proposing at Fourth Portal and we have been inspired by your mode of operating since we started Metamorphika Studio." Previous Next
