St George's Church Event Type Discussion About the Event Introduction This event is being updated More on the event lead Dr David Townend is Professor of Health and Life Sciences Law and is Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the City Law School. His expertise is in the nature of the key concepts of privacy, confidentiality, property and the public interest. He is also interested in the interplay between Law, Ethics and Manners, and in the potential of the application of the theory of politeness in governance. He explores these concepts in the practical areas of personal data protection (and particularly the use of personal data in health and life science research); patients' rights and the governance and regulation of healthcare; the operation of research ethics committees; and, ethics and justice in Equity and Trusts. His work is located in the socio-legal studies tradition, and much of his current empirical work concerns public engagement in relation to the understanding of the key concepts and practical areas he studies. He works with data scientists, with medical researchers and with ethicists and philosophers. He is currently involved in two research projects that are developing apps in health care (CARRIER and DACIL), and one exploring the governance of Research Ethics Committees (iRECS). His is working on a monograph on reimagining data protection law, and on the application of Rawls’ Theory of Justice in Equity and Trust cases. At City Law School, Townend teaches courses in Equity and Trusts, medical law, and research law and ethics. Thousands descend on our friendly open space to learn, share, and talk about what they love. Electromagnetic Field Festival 29 Dec 2023 Electromagnetic Field is a non-profit camping festival for those with an inquisitive mind or an interest in making things: hackers, artists, geeks, crafters, scientists, and engineers. A temporary town of nearly three thousand like-minded people enjoying a long weekend of talks, performances, and workshops on everything from blacksmithing to biometrics , chiptunes to computer security , high altitude ballooning to lockpicking , origami to democracy , and online privacy to knitting . To help matters along, we provide fast internet , power to the tent , good beer , and amazing installations , entirely organised by a dedicated team of volunteers. more Over a long weekend, you can expect to see a huge variety of talks across three stages, a slew of workshops, as well as music, games, and installations dotted around the site. At previous events we've heard talks about everything from genetic modification to electronics, blacksmithing to high-energy physics, reverse engineering to lock picking, computer security to crocheting, and quadcopters to brewing. Talks and workshops start at midday on Friday and last until the Sunday evening. Gates open at midday on Thursday, giving you plenty of time to get onto the site and set up your camp.
