House of Lelya Event Type Participation About the Event Introduction The Bell Agency opens out into a mesmerising slow motion sound world. Somewhere between performance and unfolding, and the afternoon's realisation, led by Charles Hayward, depends on listening, hive mind and the unique sonic details that evolve before our ears. • Victorian Belief That Rail Travel Causes Instant Insanity | FourthPortal

< Back Victorian Belief That Rail Travel Causes Instant Insanity “Railway madmen” were thought to be activated by the sounds and motion of train travel. Thoughts of innovation and new technology would drive people completely crazy are not a new phenomenon. Atlas Obscura 4 Jan 2024 Thoughts of innovation and new technology would drive people completely crazy are not a new phenomenon. There was a Victorian belief that a train ride could cause instant insanity. 'As Edwin Fuller Torrey and Judy Miller wrote in The Invisible Plague: The Rise of Mental Illness from 1750 to the Present, trains were believed to “injure the brain.” In particular, the jarring motion of the train was alleged to unhinge the mind and either drive sane people mad or trigger violent outbursts from a latent “lunatic.” Mixed with the noise of the train car, it could, it was believed, shatter nerves. In the 1860s and ‘70s, reports began emerging of bizarre passenger behavior on the railways. When seemingly sedate people boarded trains, they suddenly began behaving in socially unacceptable ways.' https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/railway-madness-victorian-trains For more: Previous Next

  • Hoodwinked: Deception And Cooperation In A Text-Based Game For Language Models | FourthPortal

< Back Hoodwinked: Deception And Cooperation In A Text-Based Game For Language Models Are current language models capable of deception and lie detection? Cornell University 4 Aug 2023 Are current language models capable of deception and lie detection? We study this question by introducing a text-based game called Hoodwinked , inspired by Mafia and Among Us. Players are locked in a house and must find a key to escape, but one player is tasked with killing the others. Each time a murder is committed, the surviving players have a natural language discussion then vote to banish one player from the game. We conduct experiments with agents controlled by GPT-3, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4 and find evidence of deception and lie detection capabilities. The killer often denies their crime and accuses others, leading to measurable effects on voting outcomes. More advanced models are more effective killers, outperforming smaller models in 18 of 24 pairwise comparisons. Secondary metrics provide evidence that this improvement is not mediated by different actions, but rather by stronger persuasive skills during discussions. To evaluate the ability of AI agents to deceive humans, we make this game publicly available at this https URL . https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.01404 For more: AI, LLM, Algorithm, Security Previous Next
