About the event

HOMAGE TO THE HOMEBREW COMPUTER CLUB

Monthly Event

Begins Thursday, 6th July 2023, then every First Thursday of the month from 7pm.

The Fourth Portal will begin a monthly homage to The Homebrew Computer Club (formed, 5 March 1975), where Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates first met!

Open to all ages, as then, the evening will be an 'informal gathering of electronic enthusiasts and technically minded hobbyists to trade parts, circuits, and information about the DIY construction of personal computing devices.'

In the spirit of maintaining the initiating values, the evening will become a regular, open forum for people of Graveham and further afield to come together to work on making computers more accessible to everyone.

Obviously, the world moved on from when 'Steve Wozniak credited that first meeting as the inspiration to design the Apple I.[6]'. The evening will include all forms of modern computing, from ChatGPT to Virtual Reality, mobile apps to virtual gathering platforms.

For this first meeting, we will host a range of retro devices from Gravesend local Mark Gladwell's vast collection of computers.

Come along as you please and relax.

  • There evening is free of charge and there is no expectation.
  • Bring along anything you wish to show, demonstrate, exchange or sell.
  • If there is a demand, we might show a computer-inspired movie later in the evening.
  • No age minimum or limit, everyone is invited.
  • No experience or understanding of Math or how computers work is required.

Fourth Portal blog post to follow on the event. More on the Homebrew Computing Club below.

Wikipedia

The Homebrew Computer Club was an early computer hobbyist group in Menlo Park, California, which met from March 1975 to December 1986. The club had an influential role in the development of the microcomputer revolution and the rise of that aspect of the Silicon Valley information technology industrial complex.

Several high-profile hackers and computer entrepreneurs emerged from its ranks, including Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the founders of Apple Computer. With its newsletter and monthly meetings promoting an open exchange of ideas, the club has been described as "the crucible for an entire industry" as it pertains to personal computing. [1]
