About the Event

Introduction

Why does our education system emphasise head-based learning at the expense of the hand or the heart?
What is education's ecological purpose?
What is the point of human beings?
Unless we find good answers to the above questions, future educators will become passive bystanders in a technological arms race between gadgets designed to fabricate the evidence of learning and gadgets designed to detect plagiarism.

John Wood (b. 1945) is Emeritus Professor of Design at Goldsmiths College, University of London. As Deputy Head of the Fine Art Department at Goldsmiths (1978-1988) he taught many well known YBAs ('Young British Artists') before creating undergraduate and postgraduate design degrees that foregrounded ethical and environmental aspects of design's impact. These programmes helped to shape the current design department. In 2002 he co-founded the Writing-PAD Network and in 2007 launched the Journal of Writing in Creative Practice (Intellect). John's most recent book is Metadesigning Designing in the Anthropocene, (2022), Routledge, London & New York, ISBN 9781032067520. He is also an active and original member of the cult band 'Deaf School' and performs stand-up comedy as 'The Reverend Max Ripple'.
